What happens if you drive without a vignette? Fines and penalties explained

Forgetting or skipping a vignette purchase can turn a smooth road trip into an expensive mistake. Enforcement across Europe's motorway network has become increasingly automated, and the penalties can add up quickly if you're caught without a valid permit.

How you get caught

Most vignette countries rely on cameras and roadside sensors that read license plates automatically as you pass certain checkpoints. In Austria and Switzerland, mobile control teams also carry out spot checks along the motorway network, so there's rarely any advance warning before a check takes place.

It's rarely just a fine

In many countries, driving without a valid vignette triggers two charges: a substitute toll that covers the missing permit, and an administrative penalty for the violation itself.

What it can cost you

Amounts vary by country, but they're rarely trivial. In Austria, for example, drivers without a valid vignette are typically charged a substitute toll of around €120, on top of an administrative penalty that in practice often lands between €300 and €350. In Switzerland, driving without the CHF 40 vignette can result in a fine of roughly CHF 200. Other vignette countries apply their own scales, and penalties can escalate further if a case goes to court instead of being settled on the spot.

How to avoid it

Buy your vignette before you reach the motorway, not after.
Double-check your license plate and vehicle category.
Keep proof of purchase accessible during your trip.
Renew before expiry if you're passing back through the same country later.

A few minutes spent buying the right permit in advance is far cheaper than paying for it after the fact.
