Motorhomes and heavy vehicles: vignette rules above 3.5 tonnes

If your vehicle, whether a camper, motorhome, or anything hauling a heavy trailer, tips the scales past 3,500 kg, standard e-vignettes usually stop applying to you. Heavier vehicles fall into a different system altogether, and missing that distinction is a common and costly mistake for motorhome travellers.

Why weight changes everything

Most vignette countries set 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight as the line between passenger-car pricing and commercial-style tolling. Cross that threshold, and you're generally required to use a different payment method entirely.

The OBU alternative

In Austria, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes need an onboard unit (OBU), known locally as a GO-Box, which calculates tolls based on distance travelled rather than a flat fee. Bulgaria takes a similar approach, requiring an OBU or route card for heavier vehicles.

Rules keep shifting

Some countries have moved heavier vehicles out of the vignette system entirely in recent years. Hungary, for instance, no longer allows motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes to buy a standard e-vignette. They must register with the e-toll system instead.

Before you set off

Check your vehicle's gross weight, not just its unladen weight, including passengers and cargo.
Confirm whether your route requires an OBU rather than a vignette.
Register any required device well before your departure date, since setup can take time.
Recheck the rules per country: the 3.5-tonne threshold isn't universal in every regulation.

A heavier vehicle means a different set of rules, but knowing which system applies before you leave keeps the extra paperwork from turning into an extra headache.
